The Everyday Project Day 166

Colin's baseball team lost to the the worst team in the league tonight 9-10. They pretty much stunk until the 5th inning when they suddenly decided to join the game. I think the score was 10-3 at one point. All of a sudden they caught fire, quit making errors and started hitting the ball.

It was almost dark. So they are pushing against the time. Bottom of the 6th, 10-7, 1 out and the biggest hitter is up. His name is Dominick. They call him The Dominator. Strikeout. And he drops the F bomb and almost gets tossed.

Colin is up. My heart is beating so fast and I am so nervous for Colin. It sucks to be up with 2 outs. He hits down the right field line. With all that is going on, everyone forgets about him and he goes to 2nd. I can't remember what happens after that but he did knock in 2 runs. 10-9. Stands go crazy. All the other games are over so the leftovers drift on over to see the end of the Juniors game.

So I overhear Scott and Colin discussing the game afterwards.

Scott: You totally came through in the clutch.
Colin: No big deal. Blah, blah. My hit wasn't that great.
Scott: You drove in 2 runs
Colin: Connor got out. We lost.
Scott: You were the only kid who didn't make an error.
Colin: We still lost. I did it for nothing.

The Everyday Project Day 165

Well after my big crash and burn yesterday, I decided to follow all advice and take it easy. Did I lay in bed and watch movies, read books and eat bon-bons???? Well, no. I caught up on emails, worked on LL and started to look at flights to NJ. I also helped Andrew order new catcher's gear after we went to Sports Authority and they didn't have his size. It was semi relaxing.

Maybe tomorrow movies, books and bon bons...right up until game time...

The Everyday Project Day 164

I used to think 50 was old. When I turned 50, I thought this is not so bad. Yes, my hair is mostly  gray, but that's what L'Oreal is for. I exercise, I'm at a good weight, my clothes fit. I usually feel at least 98%. I rarely get sick.  I have no back pain.I can still do a handstand for goodness sake. In my mind, I'm still 35.

Today I'm feeling every bit of 50. These shingles are burning and itching. The muscles around them ache. I feel jumpy and anxious. I can't get comfortable and my eye huts. Not myself at all.

That's my rant, that's my whine, I'll have some wine and tomorrow will be back in happy, groovy land.

It was nice to have my dad here for a few days. Hanging out and watching the kids games was fun. Safe travels bak to NJ and see you in July.

The Everyday Project Day 163

One of the first people we met upon joining Mira Mesa West Little League was Joe R. He is your classic "old white guy." He says what he thinks, retired military, is totally un PC and can't hear very well. Here is a bit of background.

His wife passed away a number of years ago. Joe has a big heart and will do anything for his kids and 16 grandkids. His kids have not made the best choices, thus the 16 grandkids,  but Joe supports them the best he can. We are close with Vince, his 6 or so kids and his new wife Christina.  Joe has a new girlfriend, Stephanie. Stephanie moved in next door 9 months ago. Today was Joe's 65th birthday party. Scott and I felt we should go. Neither of us really wanted to but its what we do to support our friends. Since my dad is here visiting he goes too. Cara opted out as there would be no one there for her. Colin, the party hater, went because Seth (grandkid) spent the night at our house.

The cigarette smoke hits us halfway up the walkway. Greeted at the door by a giant pit bull. Scott refuses to go in. Pitbull gets put in bedroom. Put beer we bring in cooler, thinking we will exchange it for some cold beer they already have. No cold beer. We are offered whiskey shot and Fireball (cinnamon whiskey). I had the Fireball. Dad had the warm beer. Colin is sitting on the van roof because Seth ditched him for his video game fiend cousin. . Scott takes him home. I say you better come back and not ditch us. We don't know any of the other party guests and although they are perfectly nice, its not our regular crowd. When the talk turns to the strippers who may show up, I tell Dad to eat up. Scott says the kids are texting us to come home. We are out.

Its redneck Mira Mesa...who knew?

The Everyday Project Day 162

Who would have thought?

I thought I got an insect bite at the fields last Saturday. Actually I thought it was multiple bites from a spider that crawled in my shirt from the wooden bleachers. I was monitoring through the week and using "The Force" to make them go away. Ok.. I was ignoring them and hoping they would go away on their own.

Today, it looked really bad so I went to Urgent Care. Diagnosis - Shingles! Holy Red Rash! I'll spare you a picture. Google if you dare. The blisters go from the middle of my spine around to my belly button. The good news is that I don't have it on my face or in my eye. I remember my mom having shingles there and it was horrible!

The ironic thing is I was just talking about this to my MIL, Phyllis, over Easter Break. I said I would get the vaccine as soon as I am able because of what my mom went through. According to the literature, you have to be 60 to get the shot. It turns out they just changed it to 50. Dang it! I would have gotten that shot so fast. Now I have to wait 6 months.

The good news is my mamo came back negative and all my labs are good! Yay!!!

Check out my yoga teacher, Gabby and me in the double handstand today. And the downward facing dog last week..It was a beautiful day at Camino Ruiz Park.

That's why I'm payin' the sunshine tax.

The Everyday Project Day 161

Well, here's a first. At Cara's game tonight (they lost, although Cara did a great job pitching) it was getting late and dark. Its one of the closing duties to take the trash to the dumpster.

Me: (to one of the dads standing around) Would you mind helping me out by taking this trash can to the dumpster. Please? I need to help close the snack bar and lock the sheds.
Him: Ummm... I'm leaving in a few minutes.
Me: The games almost over, it will only take a minute.
Him: I'm leaving soon.
Me: So you are saying No????? (as I look him directly in the eye)
Him: Yes (turns his back on me)

I look at the other dad standing next to him like WTF? He turns his back too!
Unbelieveable. These two do nothing but complain and shortchange their Little League team by limiting their pitching for their $$$$ travel ball team.

I plan to ask them, ever so nicely, to take out the trash, each and every time I see them.

It is what it is...

PS: A nice dad took out the trash for me.

The Everyday Projecf Day 160

My new favorite commercial is the one for Cox cable. 2 guys are jogging and one is watching Sports Center on his phone. He falls in a hole. Cracks me up. Especially that he is watching Sports Center. That show is on 24/7 around here.

The shortest MMWLL board meeting ever. 40 minutes start to finish. No drama. Yea!
However...
I'll be sending out an email to see who is interested in managing an All Star team tomorrow.

The Everyday Project Day 159

Random quotes from a van full of 13-15 year old boys on a 30 minute ride from Mira Mesa to Mission Valley for the Juniors baseball game tonight. Andrew, who is a catcher, was painting his finger nails bright pink so the pitcher could see his signs better. He told me he doesn't like the tape he is supposed to use.

Who are  you dating?
I know her.
Let's text your girlfriend.
My phone number is 800-373-3739 (FREE SEX)
Let's make a sign the says SAVE ME and put it in the window.
Aww, you got the nail polish all over.
Dude this song is sic ( full of F bombs)

Then we get there and lucky me gets to be the bench coach.
Colin had some good hits tonight and 1 strikeout.

MMWLL wins 11-5

Isn't it ironic... Colin gets a detention today for violating the cell phone rules. What did he do, you ask? He was videoing one of his friends picking up trash at lunch. That was the friend's detention.

The Everyday Project Day 157

What a perfectly awesome day! I did yoga (more on that later), walked the dog, had mimosas and made a bracelet with a friend, had more mimosas and read the paper and the Oprah magazine on my patio, ate some artichokes ( why??? because they were on sale and I felt like it), read a book, more mimosas on the patio, you get the picture. And kept to my vow of NO LITTLE LEAGUE FOR JUST 1 DAY!.

At yoga today, I learned a new pose. I'll skip the sanskrit names and just go with the English translation.  Its called one legged crow pose. I'm pretty good a regular crow pose so I thought I would step it up. Crow is an arm balance, which if you recall, was part of my New Year Resolutions to work on my arm balances  Yes, I'm still thinking about the resolutions...note I said, thinking not actual doing... until now.

This is what I think I look like... OK wish I look like...note the young, skinny, fit body, long blond braid and the serene beach I'm practicing on. Ok, I can do without the blond hair. HAHA!

This is what I will probably look like if I ever get it. Still, that "mature woman" can sure rock the Crow!

They say yoga is not about the ego but when this 50 year old is one of the only ones trying this in my class today...

The Everyday Project Day 156

It was a long, awesome, drama free day of baseball. We started the day on Coronado with Colin's game. Score MMWLL Red Sox 17 - Coronado Indians 7. 3 1/2 hours!!!It would have been nice to have been able to go to lunch with some of the team but we were already late to Cara's game back in Mira Mesa.
My 3 1/2 hour view.

Also my 3 1/2 hour view. I was secretly hoping a foul ball would come his way. Lounge chair guy sure was showing the "goods".
My extra kid, Andrew did a great job behind the plate. I also think he finally learned the value of eating breakfast since he ate nothing and almost passed out. He didn't want the breakfast burrito I got him because he wanted to enjoy the giant burger he was going to eat at lunch. We had to jack him up on granola bars, snickers and starbursts. Not good...

And here comes Colin sliding into home for an out. If the coach says "Go!", ya gotta go...

Junior was safe!
And they still shouldn't try out for cheerleaders...Stick to baseball

Movin' on to Cara's game. The girl had a great hit, almost to the fence and came in to close as pitcher. Score was Rangers 11, Red Sox 8

The Everyday Project Day 155

Yesterday I had the annual boob squeeze, exam and blood work. At the lab, the phlebotomist (notice the fancy word I used) didn't get a good vein, so she had to try again. No big deal. She was so upset and very apologetic. she wasn't even a newbie because she drew my blood before. In fact, she apologized more than once for having to stick me twice. I didn't really mind because, hey it happens.

Then I thought that she was worried I would give her a bad review on some comment card ot e-survey. It seems like everyone is doing that these days. I always respond, especially if I had a good experience. I want the good people to get credit.

So I tell her, "If this is the worst thing that happens to me all day, its a great day." She thought for a minute. Then she said, " I wish everyone was like you!"

Well...yea

Today's Camp Fit Girlz pictures. I'm the one in pink with the baseball cap. Check out my awesome headstand. I write the blog... I got bragging rights.

The Everyday Project Day 154

The Farmers are at it again. In case you forgot, Farm is the division for 7 and 8 year olds. At tonight's game Manager P accused Manager B of cheating. This was after the meeting we had on Monday to straightenout all their issues.

They argued during the game and then actually stopped the game to come and find me. Holy referee!

Manager P is paranoid. Manager B is not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree so I'm not sure how he would actually think of this.

The Farm rule that was discussed at the meeting, was every child needs to sit out 1 inning per game. No player can sit out 2 innings. There are 12 players per team. They play 6 innings. 2 kids on the bench each inning. Easy, peasy lemon squeezy.Right? You would think.

P accused B of "circumventing the rules" by having a child that was in the field go use the bathroom so he could get a player that was supposed to be sitting out back in the game. And then shifting players to somehow gain an advantage. In a game where the score is kept only to keep track of 5 runs per inning. I didn't follow P's argument then, therefore, I can't explain in now.

I asked P if he was accusing B of cheating. P told me B was circumventing the rules. So I said, "you mean cheating? In a game where no score is kept. What is the advantage to that?" P said B was breaking the rule discussed at the meeting. This went on for at least 3 minutes before I realized they game was still going on and all the parents are looking at us. Yikes! That's bad. Sooo..

If a player needs to use the bathroom, when he is done, he goes back to the same position he left. I think this was happening all along.

Don't these men know kids using the bathroom is as contagious at the flu????

The Everyday Project Day 153

Ha. I remember what I was going to write about yesterday before I got so distracted with Colin stating the obvious.

Andrew had been having some problems and one of the changes that was made is he is no longer going to Wangenheim Middle School. Part of his problem was that he was being bullied and hanging with the wrong crowd. He is now going to Charter School of San Diego, an alternative school. I checked it out and it looks perfect for him. He goes 3 days a week for a few hours. He has a lot of independent study and online work. When he is at the school he gets small group and individual attention from the teachers.  He likes it. The problem is Andrew is a VERY social kid, which brings us back to why he is at this school.

1:55 pm yesterday
Andrew: (on the phone) Ms Marybeth?????
Me: Hi Andrew. What's up?
Andrew: Can you pick me up?
Me: Do you need a ride to school?
Andrew: No, I don't go on Tuesday.
Me: Where are you? I need to go get Colin and Cara.
Andrew: Home. I want to come with you.
Me: To pick up Colin and Cara? I'm leaving in 10 min.
Andrew: yea. Can you come get me now?
Andrew: I'm sooooooooo bored.
Me:( laughing) You are so bored, the best thing you can think of to do is call me? Awww, you want to hang out with me? Hahaha
Andrew: yea...that bored.

Posting on Facebook, email "reply all", everything but face to face contact. I couldn't even sort through the email hell I was in today. I'm trying to channel my inner CRP (that's you Dad) so let's put them all in a room together and tell then to work it out and play nice. No beer until  you are done. Good thing we have a good manager rep, who is an award winning lawyer. I got him on it and he is calling a meeting tomorrow night to hash things out.

The Everyday Project Day 149

It would take forever to recap my day from 6:20am until now 8:45 and all the Little League and tutoring stuff so I'll go with the  DOD. (Drink of the Day) not to be confused with DOD (Drama of the Day).

Whipped Cream vodka - as much as you want
V-Fusion Pomegranate Blueberry - also as much as you want
ice

I'm thinking of it as the liquid version of fresh berries and whipped cream.

What ...its healthy. The bottle says 1 full serving of vegetables and 1 full serving of fruit. (not the vodka bottle. that says 1 full serving of booze)

OK... just a small note on the DOD (drama of the day) A manager in the Farm division which is an instructional division is posting scores and wins/losses on his Facebook. The bylaws state the score is not to be given out and is only kept for record keeping purposes. I'm passing this one on the the Manager Rep. Lets let him do his job.

The Everyday Project Day 148

Today is why we pay the "Sunshine Tax". What a great day!

Started off at Camp Fit Girlz with my friend Maria and her sidekick, Gabby (a new friend).
It was a beautiful day for outdoor exercising. 45 minutes of boot camp style drills and then 45 minutes of yoga. (my favorite part) Something they call a tobata is killer. You alternate 2 exercises at max power for 4 minutes in 20 second intervals. Today we alternated burpies with side lunge. Deadly! That's me in the light green t and the baseball cap. Too bad they didn't get a picture in my awesome side angle bind  pose. Maybe next time. Or we can try "wild thing" Just sayin'

I posted on Facebook about these chips. I guess no one noticed I stopped at 7-11 directly after Fit Girlz Camp and bought chips.Hahaha!

Seriously Chicken and Waffle flavored potato chips???? Who thinks of this stuff??? In my world the only acceptable flavors are BBQ, Cheddar Cheese and Sour Cream and Onion. If you want to each chicken on a waffle, eat that. Not chips full of fake chicken and waffle flavoring.

Andrew found the stickers in my car that I got for the snack shack. You would think 13 is too old to put stickers all over your face. Anyone want to make an offer? $$$$

The Everyday Project Day 147

A team did not show up for 1 of their 2 scheduled snack bar duties. After some harried phone calls, some stressed out people, hard feelings (not me), the following is my email to the manager of the no-show team.

I have a few things to say and I debated hitting send but its too late to call so here goes. And I saw the emails that you just sent but I already spent a lot of time typing...

I just got home from the rec council meeting at 9:15pm and Scott said he had words with you. He said you straightened things out but he did tell me that he said your team couldn't practice because you did not show up for your snack bar duty. He has no authority to do that. Its not in our bylaws. It may have been a rule at one time but it is not written down anywhere. Your team can practice.  He was frustrated and overwhelmed with a bunch of stuff that was happening all at once.

I understand that everyone makes mistakes and you and some team members did show up to work the snack bar as soon as possible. I appreciate this. And thanks for sweeping up the glass. I generally don't dump on people and call attention to myself, however, this was my day and it is not so different than most of my days from February through June.

*7pm - 2 hour meeting last night with Rancho Penasquitos LL to try and work a deal for field space next year.
*6am - 3 hours on the computer today to make a presentation for rec council to try and find out what exactly is going on with the renovation project and figure out where 17 teams are going to practice and play games when our fields are down.
*11:30am - Help line the Juniors field for game tonight.
*Go to the bank to deposit money and get change for tonight's snack bar.
*Go to Shell to get gas card for gas for the mowers.
*Check and answer emails from LL, Padres, etc...
*Pick my kids kids up at 3:15 from school.
*Make sure kids have uniforms and gear for games tonight. Cara was a pool player on Goonan's team. Colin had regular game. *Search garage for random stuff (belts, gloves, bats) kids swear they left at my house as they text me at 3:45.
*Pick up Andrew.  To be at the fields at 4.
*Cara no longer needed as pool player so she changes clothes to come help open the snack bar.
*4:30pm - Open the snack bar
*4:45pm - Close the snack bar to take Cara home to change because she is need as a pool player again.
*Find people to work in the snack bar and get them set up until you arrive.
*Go to bank to get change... again. We went through $150 in ones and $5s before 6pm
*Go to Smart and Final to get make sure we don't run out of nacho chips. Denise, the snack bar manager, didn't have time to shop as she was working.
*Try and watch a little of each of my kid's game.
*7pm - Go to rec council meeting  to make sure we have a place for MMWLL next season.
*Get home at 9:15
*Update Scores on the website.
*Read and respond to emails mostly about LL.

And that's just LL stuff.

Again, I appreciate that you showed up and gave a heartfelt apology. No worries on my part. Thanks for managing a team.

Here is his his response:

11:58 PM (21 hours ago)

The detailed outline of your day is tbe primary reason why i felt so bad.  I know u have so much on your plate and of all people, i added to the list of crapola u had to deal with today.  I was embarrassed because i consider myself to be an overly buttoned up individual and always want my teams, in any sport/association, to be well respected.  Im sure you dont hear it enough...but i respect you mb for all you do and what you provide to community.  Thank you for your understanding of my inability in properly fulfilling my "rocket science" duty today.

The Everyday Projecf Day 146

Injury Report
Cara did an awesome job pitching tonight against a team with mostly 13 year olds. She struck out their pitcher, who struck her out. Payback she called it. She did take a ball smashed back to her on the leg. She didn't go down, didn't cry and continued to pitch. That girl can hang with the boys any day.

One of Cara's good friends, Isabelle, has been in the hospital since Monday. She has a staph infection in one of the leg muscles that connect her hip to her pelvis. She had 2 surgeries so  far and may need a third. There is a something to drain away the liquid. One good thing is that is isn't the mercer staph infection and they can inject antibiotics directly into the infection. She will probably be in until at least Saturday. Cara feels so bad for her. She will be on crutches for a while as well. Please pray for her quick recovery.

The Everyday Project Day 145

Welcome to my cooking show. Its called This is What I Made Up Today...Like it or Else!

Baseball is starting the night games this week. That means in addition to being at the field all day on Saturdays, we will be there at least 3-4 out of 5 week nights. Yup, you read correctly, 3-4 nights during the week!.

Hot dogs and nachos get kind of old. Cup Noodles once in a while,  but a dinner of chips, red vines and gummy worms doesn't cut it.

So I try to have things that kids (and Scott) will actually eat and not break the bank on pizza and fast food. Of course I was not prepared with a bunch of meals so I made this up with what I found in my cabinet and freezer today.

1 bag frozen Potatoes O'Brian (the kind with onions and peppers)
1 can Cheese soup
1 can diced tomatoes
some left over sour cream
some Velveeta
frozen chicken breasts

Mix everything together, put the chicken on top and cook it in the crock pot.

There is no finished product shot because when I got home from the Rec Council meeting at 9pm, it was mostly gone. Like it... or Else

Stay tuned for some more made up stuff. Its how I roll.

The Everyday Project Day 143

I got invited to a party last night. This is a new group for me. I know these women from the gym. The teacher, Maria and I have known each other since Colin and Molly were in pre-school together. The others, I met recently from going to different classes. The hostess, I also found out, I know through baseball. Her name is Robin.  Anyway, she says she has "the gift" and do we want to come over, have some wine and snacks and wine, and have our cards read. So of course, she had me at wine.

Robin is already quite tipsy when I get there at 6pm. I didn't really realize since I don't know her that well. So as the other guests arrive, we are chatting and eating and drinking. Kim asks how the card reading is going to go but Robin is now upset because she can't find her pendulum. ? Then Robin says lets play a dice game called Right, Center,Left. So we play that. We are still waiting to see how the card reading is going.

Some people go outside to have a smoke. Its really loud and there is alot of laughter. 2 people leave because at this point we realize there is probably going to be no card reading. The rest of us take our drinks outside. Where's Robin??? Asleep on the couch! She passed out at her own party.

We clean up a bit and its only Maria, Julia and me left.  Julia is smoking like a chimney and I'm doing my best to stay downwind of her so I don't stink when I get home. We sit and chat for a while and Robin comes outside. She sits down and falls asleep again and starts snoring. At this point, I leave because I don't want to be the last one there. Home by 10.

Weird...but what is it with people cursing all the time? I cursed one time when I was about 10 in front of my mother. She said," A lady never curses." She rarely cursed herself although she was known to drop sh**t every now and then. I rarely curse. But this party was like a huge curse fest. F'n this and that all night long! Holy Bad Words! A friend of Maria's has a blog called Healthy Sh*t I Make. Food and cursing...

Up til this point the best curser I know is Buddy F'n Guyette, one of our baseball managers. These girls could curse him under the table.  I'm not lovin this trend.

The Everyday Project Day 141

God is Great, Beer is Good and People are Crazy...

WTF???? Cara found another bag of dog poo next to our fence. She said they obviously picked the poo off the lawn and left the bag. How nice. 1/2 a job is not good enough on this one. I'm putting a sign up tomorrow on the fence.

WTF2??? I'm going to the bank and I see this guy bent over fixing his bike. His pants are belted down below his butt and his whole white boxer covered butt is sticking up in the air. If I wasn't driving, I would have taken a picture and showed it to him. I think he was the same guy I saw in Trader Joe's a few weeks back with his butt out while he was looking at the spinach. I politely asked if he knew his underwear was showing. He slunk off, giving me a dirty look. He was probably stunned a white chick would call him out. HA!

Went to the Swap meet today to get Phyllis a new fanny pack. Its a tradition. I got myself this fab new ring... spent a whole $2. Score!

I can wear it to the CH Robinson 20 year employee getaway! In Scottsdale! All expenses paid! Can you believe Scott has been with Robinson 20 years? Well, actually 19 but they are combining the 19 and 20 year employees since there are not that many. We went to Florida for the 10 year one. It was awesome... and all the big bosses are going. Oh yea! Double Score! Holy Free Vacation!

So God is Good, (self explanatory), Beer is Good (ditto) and People are Crazy (dog poo people, and saggers) My new favorite country song.

The Everyday Project Day 140

Family Field Trip Day to the SD Zoo. Colin brought his friend, Jack. Cara had to settle with me and Phyllis as her friends. I tried everyone but no luck. She still had fun as we lef her be the tour guide. Colin and Jack were fooling around of the sky buckets and got kicked off. 13 year old boys...gotta love them.

When I was looking for the zoo passes, this photo just popped up to the top of a stack. 1995 trip to the SD Zoo. We sure do miss Lee. Look how young I look. Awwww

Look who is Queen of the Spa... What a funny dog.

The Everyday Project Day 139

Random yuckiness off the day. I come around our corner from walking Pi. I spot a green bag at the corner of of my fence. The cars that park there are always letting their trash fall out so I am used to picking up other people's crap. I once found 2 loaves of bread that someone dropped and didn't pick up... But I digress...

In the green bag... Dog crap! Someone actually picked up their dog crap and left the bag on the sidewalk by our fence. Yuck! WTF????

Random Wookie sighting.

I didn't realize Chewbacca lived in our 'hood

What do you do when the watermelon is not quite sweet enough for eating? Make a cocktail, of course...

In the Ninja blender, put all the watermelon you want, some ice, some Captain Morgan and some Peppermint Schnapps. Holy Adult Smoothy!

The Everyday Project Day 138

The best part of taking my car in for service is sitting for 2 hours straight in their cushy chairs, drinking their FREE coffee and reading Oprah and Real Simple cover to cover. Heavenly. And we have the pre-purchased service plan so it didn't cost anything out of pocket. Aahhhh!

The craziest part of last night was watching 3 hours of Extreme Couponers with Colin. He really knows who is going to save the most. His comments are hysterical. He calls them organized hoarders.

Jewelry projects for the day came from the big box of broken stuff. Pretty nice if I do say so.

The Everyday Project Day 137

I did something today that I have never done before. Get your mind out of the gutter.
I used an actual sewing machine. With the help of my friend, Linda, we made slipcovers for the old rocker/glider chair that I have had since I was pregnant with Colin. Almost 14 years...
Before

After

It was a great day. We also took a family field trip to the OB Pier and had lunch. That's why we pay the sunshine tax.
