The Everyday Project Day 197

Cara came to book club with me tonight because a bunch of her friends were going to be there.
On the way...
Cara: what do you do at book club.
Me: talk about books.
Cara: what book did you read?
Me: See Jane Run. ( I tell her about it)
Cara: did you really read that book? Or did you Google it?
Me: I read this one.
Cara : what do you do at book club?
Me: I told you we talk about the book.
Cara: you said you talk about books, not a book.
Me: we talk about the specific book and then maybe other books.
Cara: hmmm
Me: what???
Cara: I think you drink wine and gossip with your friends.
Me: why do you think that?
Cara: cause we are at 7-11 buying wine for your book club.

The Everyday Project Day 196

My chi is good. Or as the kids say my "cheese".

I almost have the yearbook done. I cleaned up the front flower beds, went to RIPPED class and the Basket Auction Fundraiser is coming along nicely for Saturday. I'm working tomorrow so $$$ to bid on the awesome baskets.

And tomorrow is Book (drinking) Club. And I actually read the book.

The Everyday Project Day 195

Even I have a last nerve and someone got on it today. Since no one.......has stepped up to do the MMWLL yearbook, guess what I spent the day doing? You got it... The yearbook. I have no idea how to do this stuff and when I called the company to see what to do they said I had to make a PDF file. I asked how to do that and they said ask the person who did it the last few years. GREEEEAAAAT. So I did. She uses Publisher. It costs $150 so I downloaded something that is similar for free. Then I had to purchase the full edition for $60 because I went over 5 pages. I have no idea how to do this stuff. I finally mostly figured it out but when I have to save it, I'm not confidant.

So I am frustrated beyond belief with this and the other stuff no one else is doing that has to be done at the end of the season... The Basket Auction, the picnic, elections, the tournaments, the "Of the Year" Awards...

I go to the field, to drop off the boys for practice and a BOARD MEMBER has her giant dog running around off the leash. I'm soooo sorry that I didn't use my polite, teacher voice when I asked (told) her that the dog had to be leashed. It's not the first time she has been told this and she continues to ignore the rule, EVERYONE else has to abide by.

She told me I was rude and embarrassed her in front of the league. I went back and appologized. She did not accept my appology. So I said, " you're not going to accept my appology?" She shrugged her shoulders and may have made a comment and turned away. I left the field for the day. Let somebody else deal with things tonight.

It's a bad night to quit drinking'

This was taken from the Caring Bridge site, the Casey family has set up.

Today is Tuesday and Sean has been intubated and on the respirator for one week.  He had a good night last night with the help of Ambien and Ativan.  The respirator was turned up so he could rest.  His morning chest X-Ray was good again.  Today it seemed as if he could move his hands a little and his shoulders back and forth which is improvement.  He asked to get his hair washed.  He gets so hot that the water on his head actually helps him to cool off.  He wears these compression stockings that keep him from getting blood clots. He also wears these special boots to keep him from getting foot drop.  The combination of the two make him really hot.
They started physical therapy today mostly stretching and range of motion.  Sean really likes it.
He has had a great day today and the plan is to give him the Ambien at 9pm and if needed the Ativan.  The respirator will be turned up so his muscles can rest and then turned down in the morning.  He seems to be taking 12 breathes on his own and the respirator gives him 4 during the day and at night they turn it to 8 breaths on his own and 8 from the respirator.
Jerry and Jesi thank you for your good thoughts and prayers.  We all know there is power in prayer.
The family has moved into the Ronald McDonald House until Sean is out of ICU and on the road to recovery.  This way they can be close by.  They have a room and meals there and everyone couldn't be nicer.
Jane has decided to finish her school year at the Ronald McDonald House.   She told her Aunt Jenny she didn't want to go back to her school now because she didn't want to answer a bunch of questions.  I think she also wants to be close to Mom and Dad.
We pray that Sean has another good night and that he wakes tomorrow with even more strength.

The Everyday Project Day 194

Just when I think I have seen it all...
A man left a baby sleeping in the car, with the car running as he was sitting in the stands watching the game.  A parent noticed it and told Scott. Scott asked who left a baby sleeping in the car and the guy got confrontational. Scott told him that's illegal and if he doesn't leave, he will call the police. There is no accounting for stupid or crazy...

Cara's team won the playoff game tonight 6-5. Moving on to the next round. Ball magnet, Cara got hit in the leg. She got hit twice last game. Once in the head and once in the back.

Update on Sean Casey: It seems he takes 1 step forward and 2 steps back. He was put into a medical coma because he had to be fully intubated over the weekend. They had to then wake him up because his blood pressure and heart rate dropped dangerously low. He was woken up and became agitated. The latest update I got was that he is awake most of the time, breathing on his own,  most of the time, can nod yes and no and likes to be read to.

The Everyday Project Day 189

Memorial Day is the only weekend we can get away in the spring due to baseball. Here is a link to the"cabin" we will be staying in for the next 4 days. Another family is joining us. I'm not sure if there is internet so if I don't post from the coffee shop, you may have to wait until  Monday. I'm not posting from my phone. Sorry.

DOD (Drama of the Day) After I left to go to the Tournament Director's meeting, I find out a mom, the wife of the team manager is standing out in center field with a glove on her hand yelling, "Hit one out! Hit one to Momma!) Her son has already hit a number of balls out, which is fantastic, but seriously? Talk about unsportsmanlike behavior. That got the other team stirred up and Scott had to escort a different coach from that team to the parking lot. This is what I have to hear about when I got home after a perfectly drama free and informative meeting. Sheesh!

Couldn't someone couldn't have calmly walked out there and talked to her??? Noooooo. Now I will have a little chat with her before the next game on Tuesday, when they play Cara's team.

We need to get the prayer chain going. The grandson of close family friends, Jim and Sue Schulte, was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. His name is Sean Casey. He has been hospitalized for about 3 weeks now and is in critical condition.  Shawn is currently on a ventilator to help him breathe.

Guillain-Barre (ghee-YA-buh-RAY) syndrome is a disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body. In its most severe form, Guillain-Barre syndrome is a medical emergency requiring hospitalization.
The exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome is unknown, but it is often preceded by an infectious illness such as a respiratory infection or the stomach flu. Luckily, Guillain-Barre syndrome is uncommon, affecting only 1 or 2 people per 100,000.
There's no known cure for Guillain-Barre syndrome, but several treatments can ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness. Most people recover from Guillain-Barre syndrome, though some may experience lingering effects from it, such as weakness, numbness or fatigue.
Let's all pray that his doctors can treat him appropriately and he can make a full recovery as well as for his family who are in such pain. He is only 13. Just like Colin.

The Everyday Project Day 186

I almost had to change my underwear, I was laughing so hard.

I sent out the regular email blast to the league today.  Since we are hosting the the Juniors and Intermediate division All Stars, I asked for people to start thinking about how they can help out. I also mentioned that since we needed to reschedule tomorrow's playoff game to Wednesday,(All Mira Mesa Band Concert) I would need some volunteers to run the Snack Shack.

I got the following response from one of my favorite sources of blog material, the mom who forgot she was getting married.

I think it would be a good training experience for my  tballer (4yr old) to work the snack bar with me, if that is something you can accommodate, I will volunteer to help on the 22nd. Let me know!

Seriously??? a 4 year old working in the snack bar??? In the words of Seth: I almost popped a lung.

This was my polite response:

Thank you for your offer but we cannot allow 4 year olds to work or even be in the snack bar. Minimum age to work is 14 with the exception of a few approved younger kids.

Her response:
Too bad :)

Embarrassing moment from yesterday. I was at Colin's game at Presidio. Scott is coaching Cara's team at MMWLL. He texts me that she hit a ground rule double. 1 hop and over the fence. WooHoo!!!

Then I get another text from him. I thought it said she hit one out. So I yell, "Cara just hit one out!" and everyone is clapping and cheering. I text a bunch of people. I am sooo proud of her. Then I find out that it wasn't Cara but Cas. I misread Scott's text. Ooops! Then I had to say it wasn't her... embarrassing.

Dang, I forgot to congratulate myself on the 6 month milestone yesterday. Yay me! 1/2 a year down and 1/2 to go.

Driving down to Colin's baseball game today.

Seth: Why does that mirror say Objects in mirror are closer than they appear? Why can't they just have it the same size as they appear?
Colin: Because everyone is already used to objects being closer than they appear. It would confuse everyone...stupid.

Both kids won and had great games. The Intermediate All Star vote was the most drama free I have ever seen. I can't tell who made the team until June 1. Green Book rules so don't ask.

Follow up to the Snack Shack email.

I got 1 response to the email I sent out about teams not showing up for their snack bar duty. Since I explicitly stated that I would not respond to emails, of course no one wants to talk to me in person...except 1.

Back on Day 169, I wrote about the mom who needed to return her LL Day at the Padres tickets because she forgot she was getting married. She approached me and said she would like to help with the snack bar and what would it entail. Then she goes on to explain that she really doesn't have time to help shop...or open...or close. And she just go married, and etc...

If she can't remember that she is getting married, do you think I can really trust her to show up and open the snack bar?

The Everyday Project Day 182

A player on Cara's team who is not one of the strongest, got his chance to pitch in tonight's game. The team has already secured the number one spot in the regular season. (1st time ever for Cara... she is always on the losing teams) Giving all the players a chance to pitch usually happens toward the end of the season when the team is up by a lot or has no chance to win.

Chris pitched 2 innings, struck out 3 of the Reds top players, walked 1 kid and made 2 or 3 plays to first. It was Awesome!!!! Game ball for him.

All Star voting for the Intermediate division is on Saturday. The kids vote on the first 5 kids and the coaches pick the next 7. President (me) gets to choose the manager. Cara is not the best player, but she is the BEST teammate and has such a good attitude. I hope she gets voted on. No voting in the Junior division for Colin. There is only 1 team so everyone will make it if they sign up.

Random things found on Colin's desk and floor. There was also big bag of trash. 2 bags of sunflower seeds, 3 knives (actually found another one after I took this picture), Police caution tape from when the guy across the street got shot, a knife sharpener, 3 kinds of tape, (and I found my pink duck tape after I took this picture), broken scissors,( found 2 more pairs), poles from the pitching thing and the batting thing, sandpaper. 4 pieces of wood???

The Everyday Project Day 179

For the 3rd time this season a team did not show up for their snack bar duty. We are limited in what we can do for penalties but I am so tired of doing other peoples jobs. This went out this morning to ALL families:

Three times this season entire teams have failed to show up for their assigned snack bar duty.

The snack bar schedule has been emailed out multiple times and is posted on the website. Teams are emailed a reminder usually  on the Monday of their week. The first item on the email blast is usually about the Snack Shack. Every available method  short of personally calling each parent before their shift is made to inform teams many weeks ahead of time who should be covering the snack bar. I spend an incredible amount of time just on this task.

Each team is assigned 3 Snack Bars shifts of about 3 hours. Each team has 12 members. Each shift requires 4 people. Therefore, the family of each player should have Snack Bar duty 1 time this entire season.

If for any reason you can/will not work your 1 shift, you have the option of hiring a teen for $20. The teen gets the money. I have had requests for teens THAT day and have honored that request.

When your team does not show up, Denise and I have to cover that shift or find someone to do it. We do everything thing in our power to make it easy for you to work in the snack bar.  We shop, we open, we close, we clean, we restock, we run to the bank for change. One or both of us are thereEVERY Tuesday, Thursday  and Saturday. All you have to do is show up and help the kids 1 time per season.

We have both missed our own players games many times to cover or help out when needed. Every single email blast that has been sent out since February has asked for an assistant to help out. We have had NOresponses.

My job as president is to run the entire league so you and your child can have an enjoyable baseball experience. Denise's job is to coordinate, manage and help when needed in the snack bar.

The next time an entire team does not show up to work their shift, the snack bar will be closed and locked. A sign will be put up stating which team did not show up for their shift.

If anyone has a question, comment , suggestion, concern or criticism regarding the snack bar or if the directness of this email offends you, please call me directly at 858-342-9398 or speak to me in person at the field. I will not respond to this email with another email.

I would like to thank all the people who show up on time for their shifts or for contacting me in a reasonable time frame to hire a teen.

The Everyday Project Day 176

Let's get ready for All Stars!
MMWLL is hosting the Junior division All Star tournament. (13 and 14 year olds) This is a pretty big undertaking. 17 games between June 22 and July 4. The field needs to be prepped daily, announcers and scorekeepers need to be found. The Snack Shack has to be up and running. Thank goodness we have a great group of teens who LOVE helping out.

Now...no one - out of our 10 league district will host the Intermediate All Star Tournament (11,12,13 year olds) Clairemont Hilltoppers, who are already hosting a tournament volunteered to do the beginning few games before their 9-10 year old tournament starts. Guess who got asked to take it on? You know it..us.  11 more games - same time frame. If no one hosts there will be no tournament.

The Everyday Project Day175

Traditionally the 8th grade students in San Diego take a big trip to the East Coast. They go to Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Before the budget cuts and some law about everything being equal, the schools used to sponsor the trips. Parents had to pay, of course but I believe the cost was lower and they went during school time. Now its run through the PTSA. Parents still have to pay but now the trip is taken during spring or summer break.

This evening I went to a meeting for next year's trip since Colin will be in 8th grade. Everyone knows about the "Big 8th Grade Trip". Last night this was the conversation.

Me: Colin, what do you think about the East Coast trip next year?
Colin: blank look
Me: Do you know what I'm talking about?
Colin: blank look
Me: ???? well??? The trip 8th graders take to the East Coast???? New York? Boston? Philadelphia? D.C? East Coast???The coast opposite us?
Colin: You mean the one where we can go to all those places when we go to the East Coast for a lot less money? Like where we went already?
Me: Well, yea
Colin: Why would I want to do that? You or Grandpa can take me to those places IF  I want to go.
Me: Well, there is the social aspect. A week away from your parents, with just your friends, hotels...
Colin: I don't think so.
Me: Are any of your friends going?
Colin: I don't know.
Me: I'll go to the meeting to find out about it.
Colin: blank look

I go the meeting. I only recognized 1 set of parents and they didn't belong to friends of Colin. Price $2,743. They do about a billion things in 7 days. Sleep is not one of them. I do not see Colin going on this trip. Cara on the other hand... 2 years to save the money.

The EveryDay Project Day 174

The high school student I tutor is reading The Catcher in the Rye. I read that book in high school, more than 30 years ago.( Holy gray hair...did I just write more that 30 years ago?) I remember it was a huge deal and everyone looked forward to reading a "banned" book. How controversial! Then I remembered what a huge disappointment it was. I thought it was one of the worst books I ever read. I couldn't exactly remember why. It has been more than 30 years.

I started reading it yesterday to refresh my memory. 3 pages into it, I remembered why. Holden Caulfield, the main character is the most whiny, self centered, delusional, annoying character there is. I hate the writing style, the cursing and the repetition of words. There is no plot. Its just a rambling mess. Just my opinion. You may like old Holden and the whole goddamn book. (That's how most of it goes) However, I didn't want to influence Angelo's opinion.

Me: How far are you into the book and how do you like it so far? Its a classic. Most kids your age like it.
Angelo: Its OK. ( I didn't really expect a different answer)
Me: What do you like so far?
Angelo: I don't know. ( ditto on that)
Me: How do you like the main character?
Angelo: He lies, he only thinks about himself, he lies to himself. He thinks he's all that when he's not. He has no point. He is annoying and I would never be friends with him. So I guess I really don't like this book too much.

The Everyday Project Day 172

My friend and yoga teacher, Jessica Monroe and her family have started a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for their duck farm. Please donate if you feel so inclined. You can give as little as $1.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1263576660/organic-duck-egg-farm

The league had 120 tickets to yesterday's LL day at the Padre game. I tried to seat the teams together as best I could when I distributed the tickets. Instead of putting a team in one big line over 22 seats, I put them in rows 2  or 3 rows behind each other so they could turn around and chat if they wanted. Makes perfect sense to me.
Parent: (at the game yesterday) All of our team is not together.
Me: Your tickets were in 2-3 rows behind each other so you were not in one big line.
Parent: People that we don't know are in our seats.
Me: ( in my brain) Seriously??? You sought me out with this??? Contrary to popular belief, I don't control the world.
Me: I can't control the people who don't sit in their correct seats. Show them your ticket and ask them to  move. If you don't want to do that, ask an usher. Enjoy the game.

Scott and I went out for appetizers and drinks after the game. Then took the kids to a Persian Resaurant. Back out for nightcaps and in bed, sleeping through the Amazing Race before 9. Dang we are such party animals.

We headed downtown for a little stay cation and Little League Day at the Padres tomorrow. Hodad's was a little too rocker for Scott but the food was good. We can also cross another restaurant off our

The Everyday Project Day 168

After 3 and 1/2 hours on the phone and chat with ATT and Apple, this is result that I am faxing to their claims department. This is so beyond ridiculous. If you are on my Facebook you already saw my post this morning about how much ATT sucks. Bottom line is I upgraded to Iphone4 for Colin. They sent the phone. It was defective. They sent another one and charged me $352 until the defective phone came back. The second phone was defective. They told me to exchange it at an Apple store since I refused to have another $352 charged to my card. They said a refund could take 30 days...whatever.

I feel a tiny bit bad for their agents I freaked out on but seriously, my last 3 conversations ended with. "DO NOT PUT ME ON WITH ANYONE WHO HAS TO REVIEW MY CASE AGAIN. I ONLY WANT TO TALK TO THE PERSON WHO CAN GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK! EVEN IF IT IS THE CEO OF THIS STINKIN COMPANY." (that's me yelling)

Then their claims department called and said I need to take it up with Apple because that's who charged me. Any 5 year old can see ATT on my bank statement.

As per Employee ID # NM926G: I am submitting documentation that my bank account ending in3599-S08 was charged $352.07 on 3/25/2013 for an iphone4. I am also submitting my receipt from the Apple Store on 3/27/2013. You can clearly see, I was not charged by Apple as all of your customer service agents have been claiming. I would like the card provided to you agent credited with $352.07. If that is not possible, I would like my AT&T account credited with $352.07.

I originally upgraded to an iphone 4 with a cost of .01 +tax and fees. That phone was defective as was the replacement. Your agent, Travis, told me to go to the Apple store and exchange it there and there would be no problems. I am beyond frustrated and am in the process of telling everyone I know in person and on social media how disappointed I am in AT&T and their lack of ability to do a simple return. Any other retailer would have apologized and credited my account immediately.

I have been on the phone and on ATT Chat with at least 6 of your customer service agents. I have been on the phone with Apple. Apple has verified to your agent that the phone was returned to their store. You can clearly see, I was not charged by Apple as all of your customer service agents have been claiming. I will not get on the phone with anyone who cannot tell me that I am credited back the $352.07.
Please confirm via text or email that you have received this letter and attached documentation.

And then I went to baseball... but that's another story.

The Everyday Project Day 167

When I walk Pi, I always go the same way. On my route I pass by a house that has a gated patio. Behind the gate are 3 small dogs. I think they are all some sort of chihuahua/dachshund mixes. These dogs are always dressed up in dog clothes. Dogs should not wear clothes; maybe a bandana but thats it. Sometimes they have matching outfits, some days they coordinate. I have seen Chargers  and Padre clothes. When we walk by, they go crazy barking. Today one dog was wearing a cone. Now that was funny.  It's a great part of my day.

Not a great part of my day. I spent over an hour waiting for the police to come evict some vagrants from one of the score booths. Did the cops come? Yes...5 hours later. Did I miss yoga? Yes. Am I annoyed? Yes. What did the officer say when I went back to the field 5 hours later md saw him sitting in the parking lot.? It's a low priority call and they can't really do much. Should I still be annoyed? Yes. I have a bunch of parents asking me why we have hobos living at the field. When I tell them it will be a priority when someone other than me calls them they say....oh..ok....meaning no.
