The Everyday Project Day 263

Family Field Trip Day - Padres vs Orioles

My tutor student's mom gave us AWESOME seats to the Padre game today. 1st base line field level! Scott had to work so it was me, Colin, Cara and Phyllis. Surprise! No extra kids.

Me with my $10 beer

Although the Pads lost and we all had a good time, my point today is sunscreen.

 Here is the backstory.

Back in "the day" I was one of those baby oil tanners. I couldn't get dark enough. 10-2 was my prime time. Hawaiian Tropic Oil SPF 2 was too much protection. ( Thanks Mom) Before I have had any skin cancer, I have seen the error of my youthful days and have embraced sunscreen. In the morning, I wash my face and on goes the 30 SPF. If I'm going to be at the field, beach or on recess duty, on goes the sunscreen. My favorite is the Hawaiian Tropic Sheer touch. It's a lotion and a sunscreen and has that recognizable HT scent. It may seem like I am still a tanner but the tan I have is still courtesy of SPF 30. 10 minutes in the sun and I'm tan. It is what it is...

Scott is a fair skinned man and on tons of meds that interact with the sun. We go through bottles of Banana Boat 110.

Colin is an easy tanner but he still goes with the clear zinc on his face.

Cara got the MacNaughton skin and will fry like an egg on the sidewalk. She knows to reapply. Both kids wear rash guards and long shorts at the beach and the pool so they are well covered. Rarely do they get more than pink.

Which brings me to the Padre game today.
Me: Let's go. We are out the door in 10 min. Sunscreen up.
10 minutes later. Lets go. Everyone sunscreened?
Cara: Yeah,
Colin: mumble....
Phyllis: ....
Me: Phyllis did you sunscreen? Our seats are in the sun.
Phyllis: I guess I better put some on....(reluctantly)
Me: Phyllis, we go through this all the time. Put on the sunscreen.
Phyllis: well, OK

At the game, we are in the sun. I notice Cara melting and being uncomfortable so at the top of the 5th inning I ask her if she wants to try and find some seats in the shade. You would have thought she won the lottery. She did suck it up and not whine. I gotta give her that but being the good mom that I am...I noticed her pain.

I asked Colin and Phyllis if they wanted to join us. Without appearing to like the seats, I could tell Colin really did like them and didn't want to leave. Phillis stayed too. I would have stayed since I was good in the sun and that's probably how I should have done it. HOWEVER, Phyllis is a full grown grandma and should have been able to speak her mind and go with Cara to the shade. But nooooo, she stays with Colin.

On the ride home, as she shows me her lobster red arms
Phyllis: I got some sunburn today.
Me: didn't you sunscreen like I told you?????
Phyllis: Well I did the tops of my arms.... And I did my ears when you passed me the stick...
Me: Did you miss it when I said everyone sunscreen before we left. All over exposed body parts? We will be in the sun????
Phyllis: Well, I did the top of my arms...
Me: Use the aloe gel when we get home.

Seriously? When does my responsibility end???

This is jackfruit.

I got it at the farmers market yesterday. Its really good. Part of my plan to try new things...Love it!!!!!

The flesh of the jackfruit is starchy and fibrous, and is a source of dietary fibre. The flavor is comparable to a combination of apple, pineapple, mango and banana.

The Everyday Project Day 262

Another personal pet peeve.

If one is in a texting conversation, it is obviously a conversation. It usually starts with a question, maybe to make a plan with someone or just something one wants to know.

You know when the conversation is over because the question is answered or the plan is finalized. And you are down to one word answers or a :) I can't stand it when I am left hanging, plan not made or question unanswered.

Finish the conversation. Please...

the Everyday Project Day 261

The Bachelorette Season Finale is tonight. 8-11 of Bachelorette drama. How can she pick one of the 2 leftovers when her main man dumped her. I would not want to be any of those 3 watching this show back. No Way Jose!

I have 10 minutes to get this done before I have to watch the "MOST DRAMATIC SEASON FINALE EVER!"

At 7:10  I tell Cara that we have to run Kaela over to her house to get her stuff to spend the night and be back before the show. Jack, who is Colin's guest, does not need to go to get any stuff from his house. Being a boy, he is good with whatever...
Kaela: What show does your mom have to watch?
Cara: Mom is it the Bachelor or Bachelorette?
Me: ette. don't play dumb, like you haven't watched most of this season.
Kaela: What it is it about?
Cara: Its this show where a bunch of guys live in a house and try to woo this girl, I forgot her name into marrying them.
Me: ( in my brain) Did my 12 year old just say "woo into marrying"?
Cara: They have to do a bunch of challenges and go to lots of fancy places. They whine and cry and make drama with each other. My mom and Mom-Mom LOVE it. Its stupid. Let's play Monopoly when we get home.

The Everyday Project Day 260

One of my SD pet peeves is the discussion of a new airport. Over the years we have spent millions of $$$$ researching sites. Miramar ( military wont give it up), Tijauana( a dual country airport will never work), North Island (more military), Inland Valley (too far out in the desert) Some say the current airport will be maxed out in 2025 because there is only  1 runway.

In the UT today there is a section highlighting the opening of the new section of Terminal 2 at the airport. I find this very fascinating. There are tons of amenities featuring local restaurants ( Saffron, Phil's BBQ), breweries( Stone) and shops(Brighton).

Indoor doggie rest areas

Places to refill your water bottle. It also counts refills to see how many bottles will not end up in landfills. How cool is that?

There is lots of public art using lights and crystals. I think it will be beautiful!

And a spa. While I get that some people may spend quite a bit of time in airports, I think it would be difficult to relax and enjoy a massage while trying to make sure my flight was on time and not leaving early. Or changing gates. Or delayed. Or rerouted. An airport is the last place I would go to a spa.

The are giving tours next weekend. I just think I may sign up to go.

The Everyday Project Day 259

Sometimes Phyllis gets the weirdest things. I know we all have our own style and I'm sure people even question some of my choices ...although I' m not sure why...

Whenever Phyllis is here, random things show up on my work table; something that needs to be fixed or something she bought. A few days ago it was a blue pendant that has one of those faces that follow you around.
Me: did you put this here?
Phyllis: I got it on EBay. I thought it looked unique and different.
Me: its different....
Phyllis: I thought you could make something out of it.
Me: OK....

Being a slow day around here, this is the result.

My Oldest, Dearest and Coolest Friend, Audrey and her daughter got tattoos today. I must admit I'm a little jealous.

I kind of want to get another tattoo but I'm trying to save my money for my birthday present.
How cool will I look riding around Mira Mesa on a scooter???

The Everyday Project Day 258

I LOVED my day!

Me: (in my brain at 6 am) I don't feel like exercising. My shoulders hurt. I should do Something, I have book club tonight so there will be lots of eating and drinking. Do some exercise. You are 50, you look good. Take the day off. Don't look at Facebook. Maria or Gabby will post something inspirational so I'll have to do something. The boys asked to go to the beach. Andrew needs shin guards. I have book club. Beach, Von's Book Club, shin guards...Camp Fit Girlz...

So this is how it goes:
Get up at 6:30. Make up a mixed grain salad with a bunch of stuff I have like quinoa, couscous, lentils, beans, veggies etc. Add the pesto I made yesterday as a dressing. Awesome!
8:15 Go to Camp Fit Girlz and find out we are going on a hike. YES!!!!! No shoulder work
11am Take boys to Big 5 for shin guards before the beach.
12 pm Relax on the beach. ( like what else would I do) and eavesdrop on the conversation next to me. Holy Personal Info! That's a blog for another day.
5 pm get home and make focaccia for book club as well as get other stuff ready.
7  pm Book Club - what a bunch of random stuff! Talk about book for 10 seconds, eat, talk about food, eat, drink, eat cherry bombs, talk about cherry bombs, talk about who will be in the 50 Shades of Gray movie, eat, drink, gossip, eat, drink, repeat... and talk about some books...and movies... and gossip...

The Everyday Project Day 257

I just got back from the most AWESOME team party for a bunch of 13/14 year old boys. Trampoline Dodgeball.  Cara and another boy's sister, Julia got to pick the teams in a school yard pick. Since they were both a little shy, they each picked the 1st player and the the boys chose the rest.

2 hours later, they said, " Really? It's 2 hours already??? That was so fast!" Holy Dodgeball, were they sweaty!

What a great end to a fabulous season.

And I recommend Sky High Sports Trampoline Gym to everyone.
